Year Inducted 2003

"Lee Ann Berning and Patty (Giannis) McKay formed one of the best doubles teams in the nation during their era.

In both 1977-78 and 1978-79, Berning and McKay (Giannis) captured the Midwest Region and State doubles championships. They also advanced on the national stage, claiming a #6 AIAW finish at the championships in 1979 and a #12 finish in 1978.

McKay (Giannis) captured the AIAW state singles championship (#1 singles) as a freshman in 1977-78. That year, Valpo also won the AIAW state team title. As a junior in 1979, she claimed the state doubles title with Barb Hogstrom and a state singles championship at #2 singles. McKay (Giannis) was selected as the Woman Athlete of the Year in 1979-80 by the Valpo Physical Education and Athletic Department.

She graduated from Valpo in 1981 and earned a J.D. in 1984 and an M.A. in 1985 from Loyola (Ill.) University. McKay (Giannis) worked as an associate attorney for Lord Bissella & Brook from 1985-92.

Berning rehabilitated from a broken leg and fractured knee in 1975-76 after winning the state singles championship (Indiana Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Organization) as a freshman in 1974. Following graduation from Valpo in 1979, she served as a teacher/tennis coach in the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Community School system until 1991. After earning 100 wins coaching girls tennis and 100 victories guiding the boys tennis team, Berning was inducted into the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches and Fort Wayne Tennis halls of fame.

Berning worked as a head tennis professional for Wildwood Racquet Club in the Fort Wayne area from 1990-2000. She is currently co-owner of the club.
