Johnson Scores Twice as Valpo Tops Lipscomb
Sunday, September 10, 2006
Lori Johnson (Sachse, Texas/Naaman Forest H.S.) scored twice and Valparaiso unloaded 39 shots toward goal on Sunday afternoon as the Crusader completed a weekend trip to Nashville, Tenn. with a 3-1 victory over Lipscomb.

Valpo's 39 shot attempts are second most in school history, just one shy of the school mark set back in 1997 at Saint Mary's (Ind.). Of the 39 attempts, 29 were on goal with Lipscomb goalkeeper Katie Shelton making 25 stops.

The Lady Bisons found the scoreboard first in the 18th minute as Sasha Sack found the back of the net. Valpo responded less than seven minutes later as Johnson banged home a rebound, her second goal of the season, to send the match into intermission tied at one.

Johnson then tallied what would become her second match-winner of the season, and fourth of her career, at the 52:51 mark on another rebound goal. Jackie Thomas (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley H.S.) added the insurance goal in the 68th minute on a corner kick for her first career tally as the Brown and Gold improve to 4-2 on the season. Lipscomb falls to 1-5.

Mele Cabral (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) made five saves in goal for the Crusaders in her collegiate debut. Valpo outshot Lipscomb 39-7 and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Valparaiso will continue its current four-match road swing next Friday afternoon as the Crusaders open Mid-Continent Conference play in Macomb, Ill. against the Westerwinds of Western Illinois. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
