Sunday, October 8, 2006
Kendall Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Carmel Catholic H.S.) and Sarah Jewell (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill H.S.) each scored twice as Valparaiso posted a 5-1 non-conference victory over Lewis on Sunday afternoon at Eastgate Field.

Jen Bartels (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.) tied the match at one for the Crusaders scoring far post from the right side of the box at 19:29 of the first half. Lori Johnson (Sachse, Texas/Naaman Forest H.S.) earned the assist. Bartels was honored alongside classmate Liberty Ziegahn (Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service H.S.) for Senior Day.

Brown then notched what would be her second match-winner of the season and fifth of her career, spinning at the top of the box and beating goalkeeper Lindsay Frederick to the right side of the goal with 13:18 to play before intermission. Dana McGlone (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) drew the assist.

Just 57 seconds later, the third shortest span between goals in school history, Jewell received a thrown in from Ani Michl (Deerfield, Ill./Stevenson H.S.) lofted a short from the near sideline up over the keeper from 45 yards out to increase the lead to 3-1.

Just 3:13 before the break, Jewell posted her team-leading seventh goal of the season taking a Laura Murphy (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley H.S.) cross from the left and depositing the ball in the back of the net to put Valpo in front by three.

Brown added her second goal of the match, and 15th of her career, beating three defenders from the top of the box at the 57:06 mark. For the sophomore, she moved into a tie with Elizabeth Tatro (1993-1996) for fourth place on the Crusaders' career goal scoring list.

Bethanee Taylor gave Lewis an early 1-0 lead volleying home a shot from the top of the box just 3:38 into the match. Less than 16 minutes later Valpo would tie the match and never trail again.

Valparaiso outshot the Flyers 25-8 for the match, including a 16-2 edge in the first half. The Crusaders also had 10 corner kick opportunities to just two for Lewis (3-13).

Mele Cabral (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.), making her first career start at home, made two saves for the win while Frederick made 10 stops for the Flyers.

Valparaiso (11-3) will look to tie the school record for victories in a season on Friday afternoon as the Crusaders return to Mid-Continent Conference play in Shreveport, La. Kickoff at Centenary is set for 7 p.m.
