Monday, March 31, 2008

Valparaiso University’s Elliott Gibbs (Munster, Ind./Munster H.S.) has been named the Horizon League’s Pitcher of the Week following his complete game shutout victory against Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon.

The sixth-year senior right-hander scattered just four hits on the day after taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning.  Gibbs struck out nine and walked just two on his way to his first collegiate shutout and second career complete game.  He needed just 118 pitches on the day.

In two Horizon League starts, Gibbs has a 2.03 earned run average in 13.1 innings of work.  He has struck out 12 and allowed just 10 hits, while league foes are hitting just .196 against him.

Valparaiso (6-18, 2-3 Horizon League) will host Illinois Tech on Wednesday afternoon.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Emory G. Bauer Field.
