Crusaders Close Out 2008 Campaign at Great Lakes Regional

The Valparaiso men’s cross country squad closed out the 2008 season Saturday at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in West Lafayette, Ind., finishing in 25th place.

The Crusaders tallied 747 points on the morning for their 25th-place showing.  Wisconsin took the overall team championship with 39 points, while Notre Dame’s Patrick Smyth won the individual title.

Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]) led Valpo in his final race as a Crusader, completing the 10K course in 34:15.0, good for 115th place.  Fellow senior Leandro Schultz (Valley View, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) was the next Crusader across the line, coming home in 157th place with a time of 35:28.6.

Sophomore Joel Hartenberger (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) was the third Valpo runner to complete the race, covering the 10K in 35:35.5 for 159th place.  Bryan Gill (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) placed 164th with a time of 35:42.3, while freshman Tyler Toll (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) closed out the Crusader scorers with a 170th place finish, crossing the line in 35:57.1.
