Valparaiso wrapped up its eight-match road trip on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 7-0 Horizon League match to Cleveland State in at River Oaks Racquet Club in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Vikings opened the match winning all three doubles contests. Melissa Holzinger and Jackie Tabb opened with an 8-0 victory over Camill Burden (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) and Jackie O’Reilly (DePere, Wis./DePere H.S.) at the third spot in the order. Sanda Bjelan and Myra Pepino added an 8-2 win over Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) and Katie Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo H.S.) at number two doubles while Catrine Bjerrehus and Charlotte Gibbons added an 8-3 triumph over Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) and Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.).
In singles play, Cleveland State (12-8, 2-1 Horizon League) posted straight sets victories in each match. Bjerrehus was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Sajevic at the top of the order while Gibbon defeated Keifer 6-0, 6-3 at number two singles. Holzinger added a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Schwartz at the third spot while Tabb notched a 6-1, 6-0 win against Bilyeu at the fourth spot. Bjelan downed Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles while Pepino topped Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) 6-0, 6-0 at the sixth spot.
“I’m proud of the way we played today,” head coach Traci Young said. “We gave a lot of heart. Jenny played a great match at third singles.”
Valparaiso (1-12, 0-3) will return home on Wednesday afternoon for a 3 p.m. match against Indiana Wesleyan at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
