Kevin Fedde (Fort Collins, Colo./Heritage Christian H.S.) posted the fourth fastest 1650 freestyle time in school history for Valparaiso on the opening night of the Calvin Winter Invitational held in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The freshman posted a mark of 16:58.09 in the race to finish seventh overall for the Brown and Gold.  Fellow freshman Steve Booth (Saint Joseph, Mich./Saint Joseph H.S.) also scored for the Brown and Gold in the mile, touching the wall in 18:09.07 to place 15th overall.

Valpo finished the night with a fourth place effort in the 800 free relay, the only other event contested on day one.  Austin Hunter (La Crescent, Minn./La Crescent H.S.), Blake Edwards (Orange, Calif./Lutheran H.S. of Orange County), Fedde, and David Sivak (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) touched the wall in a time of 7:12.07, a season’s best for the Brown and Gold.

As a team, Valpo tallied 44 points on the first day of the three-day competition, six points ahead of Calvin.  Grand Valley State leads through two events with 147 total points.

The Crusaders will return to the water on Friday morning for the middle day of competition with preliminary heats beginning at 9 a.m. CST and finals starting at 5 p.m. CST.
