Valparaiso University’s Kevin DeHerrera (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) has been named the Horizon League’s Athlete of the Week in men’s tennis after posting a 3-1 singles record and a 2-2 doubles mark in four matches last week in Florida.
The sophomore opened the week with a straight sets win at number five singles against Boston University, helping lead the Crusaders to the win against the Terriers. He also teamed with Michael Woodson (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) for an 8-2 triumph at number three doubles.
At number six singles against Fairfield, DeHerrera earned a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory, before closing his week out with another straight sets win at five against Monmouth. He and Woodson against teamed at third doubles for an 8-3 win against the Hawks.
For DeHerrera, the Athlete of the Week honor is the first of his career. On the year, he leads the Brown and Gold with seven singles victories and is tied for second with five doubles wins.
DeHerrera and the Crusaders return to the courts on Saturday afternoon as Valpo begins Horizon League play facing the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. First serve is set for 2 p.m. in Green Bay, Wis.
