Valparaiso stepped out of Horizon League action on Monday afternoon while continuing its four-match homestand, dropping a 6-1 decision against Wayne State at the Valpo Tennis Complex.

“We played Wayne State much more competitively today than we did in the fall (a 9-0 loss),” head coach Traci Young said.

Wayne State (15-5) jumped on top winning the opening doubles point, taking two of the three matches.  Valpo’s Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) and Jackie O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./DePere H.S.) continued to play well for the Brown and Gold at number three doubles, posting an 8-1 victory over Debora Correa and Medha Jha.  The Warriors earned wins at one and two though to secure the point.  Sharon Gill and Kristina Goranskaya topped Abby Wright (Sarasota, Fla./Pendleton H.S.) and Brittany O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest H.S.) 8-1 at the top of the lineup while McCall Monte and Milena Vuksanovic defeated Katie Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo H.S.) and Camill Burden (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) 8-4.

Jackie O’Reilly added her fourth victory in her last six outings at number five singles for the Crusaders, defeating Correa 6-4, 6-3.  Wayne State won the other five contests in straight sets though.  Gill was a 6-1, 6-0 victor against Wright at number one while Goranskaya defeated Brittany O’Reilly 6-2, 6-1 at number two.  Vuksanovic downed Bilyeu 6-4, 6-2 at three while Monte was a 6-3, 6-0 winner against York at four.  Jha rounded out the lineup with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) at sixth singles.

Valparaiso (0-11) will close its four-match homestand with another non-conference tilt on Wednesday afternoon, hosting IPFW.  First serve is set for 3 p.m. at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
