Valparaiso fifth-year senior goalkeeper Ryan Schwarz (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) was named the Horizon League Player of the Week Monday after matching the Crusader career shutout record in a 1-0 win over UNLV in the season opener Saturday.

Schwarz had to make six saves, keeping the Crusaders in the match as the Rebels were credited with a 16-5 shot advantage.  Then a late Valpo goal made the senior’s saves all the more meaningful, as Schwarz earned his 20th career victory.  Perhaps more impressively, however, the clean sheet was the 14th scoreless outing of Schwarz’s career, matching current Valpo assistant coach Jeff Oleck’s program record for shutouts.

The Crusaders return to the pitch Monday afternoon at the UNLV Nike Invitational, closing tournament action against UC Riverside.
