Milwaukee Downs Valpo in Horizon League Opener

Valparaiso opened the Horizon League portion of its women’s tennis schedule on Friday afternoon, dropping a 7-0 match to Milwaukee at Le Club Sports Club in Milwaukee, Wis.

The Panthers opened the match surrendering just two games total in doubles.  Christina Colarossi and Maddy Soule defeated Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.) and Megan Barthels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central H.S.) 8-0 at the top spot while Kelly Fritz and Kristin Kurer won by the same score against Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) and Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) at number two.  Megan Gow and Brittany Skemp topped Aubree Zdanovec (Appleton, Wis./East H.S.) and Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph’s H.S.) 8-2 at third doubles.

Milwaukee (6-3, 2-0 Horizon) also swept all six singles matches in straight sets.  Soule defeated Barthels 6-1, 6-0 at the top while Chelsea Bailey defeated Hamel 6-1, 6-1 at second singles.  Colarossi downed York 6-0, 6-0 at three while Skemp defeated Fredlake by the same score at number four.  Zakiewicz played Valpo’s closest match, dropping a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Beth Ganser while Gow rounded out the lineup with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Lauren Kammerer (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.).

Valparaiso (2-3, 0-1) will return to action on Saturday morning with a home match at Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet Club.  First serve against Western Illinois is slated for 11 a.m.
