Crusader Men Continue Season at Woehnker Invitational

The Valparaiso men’s swimming and diving team continued its 2012-2013 campaign this weekend at the two-day Woehnker Invitational in Crawfordsville, Ind., hosted by Wabash, finishing in sixth place.

The Crusaders totaled 207 points over the two-day event to finish in sixth place.  The University of Indianapolis won the team title with 681 points.

Valpo’s results at the meet were highlighted by an event victory from freshman Frederick Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany).  Jenny touched the wall first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.44, one of two podium finishes from the rookie at the meet.  Jenny also moved into Valpo’s all-time top-ten in the 100 breaststroke, placing third with a time of 1:00.16, eighth-fastest in Crusader history, while also leading the Crusader contingent in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.88.

Fellow freshman Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) picked up a trio of top-eight finishes over the course of the two-day event.  Castro Diaz swam to a fourth-place finish in the 400 individual medley, posting a time of 4:18.34.  The freshman also finished fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:02.53) and eighth in the 100 fly (53.84).

Other Crusaders to pick up top-ten finishes in Crawfordsville this weekend included freshman Atolo Tuinukuafe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and sophomore Matt King (Clinton, Ill./Clinton).  Tuinukuafe finished eighth in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.58) and ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.83), while King swam to a tenth-place finish in the 100 backstroke (57.63).

King also led all Crusader swimmers in the 50 free and 200 backstroke with times of 23.44 and 2:05.98, respectively.  Also leading Valpo over the two-day meet was freshman Cody Jones (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) in the 1650 free with a time of 18:49.91, sophomore Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West) in the 100 free with a time of 49.82 seconds, sophomore Fernando Aguilar (San Salvador, El Salvador/Colegio Internacional de San Salvador) in the 500 free with a time of 5:16.00 and sophomore James Christenson (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.22.

Valpo’s 200 medley relay squad of King, Jenny, Castro Diaz and Braun touched the wall in sixth place with a time of 1:39.49.  The 800 free relay, comprised of Castro Diaz, Jenny, Braun and Aguilar, covered the distance in 7:28.00, good for seventh place, while the quartet of King, Aguilar, freshman Jhonathan Roeder (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) and sophomore William Mathe (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) placed ninth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:33.93.

Valparaiso returns to the pool next at the Calvin Winter Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich.  The three-day meet kicks off on Thursday, Nov. 29.
