Valparaiso (6-3, 0-0 Horizon)
Game #10: Saturday, Dec. 15 - 7:05 p.m.
at Missouri State (2-7, 0-0 MVC)
JQH Arena (11,000) - Springfield, Mo.

Next Up in Crusader Basketball: The Valparaiso men’s basketball team kicks off a stretch of four games in an eight-day span prior to the Christmas holiday on Saturday night, as the Crusaders travel to Springfield, Mo. to face Missouri State. The game is the return engagement from the 2011 BracketBusters contest which saw Valpo down the Bears in front of a national audience on ESPN2.

Last Time Out: Senior Ryan Broekhoff scored a game-high 24 points Saturday evening at the Pit in Albuquerque, N.M., but 23 turnovers were too much for Valparaiso to overcome as the Crusaders fell by a final score of 65-52 to #18/20 New Mexico. The Crusaders shot nearly 50% from the floor, hitting 18-of-37 (48.6%), but their 23 turnovers were turned into 22 points by a top-20 New Mexico squad which remained unbeaten (10-0) on the season.

Head Coach Bryce Drew: Bryce Drew returns for his second season at the helm of the Valparaiso men’s basketball program in 2012-2013 after leading the Crusaders to the Horizon League regular season title in his first year as head coach. Drew was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year after guiding Valpo to a 22-win campaign, including a 14-4 mark within the league to capture the title by two games. Drew ascended to the head coaching position on May 17, 2011 after spending six seasons as an assistant and associate head coach with the Crusaders.

Series Notes: Missouri State holds a 14-4 advantage in the all-time series over Valpo, including a 6-2 edge in Springfield. The two sides have not met on the Bears’ home court since 1990, however. The last meeting, after a 21-year series hiatus, came at the ARC on ESPN2 in a BracketBusters matchup in February of 2011, an 80-67 Crusader win. Valpo was led by 24 points from Brandon Wood, as four of its five starters scored in double figures.
