The Valparaiso University men’s golf program has been named an All-Academic Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America for the third straight year, the GCAA announced this week. In addition, the Crusaders were honored with President’s Special Recognition status for the second consecutive year, as they were one of just 10 Division I programs to post a cumulative team GPA of 3.5 or higher.

"This is an extremely important award for our golf team, and I couldn't be more proud of our team, showcasing their skills and abilities both on the golf course and in the classroom," said Crusader head coach David Gring. "To win three tournaments last year, including the Horizon League Championship, and combine that with a 3.61 cumulative team GPA for the school year shows the balance that these young men demonstrate in their everyday lives."

Valpo was the only one of the 10 programs to receive President's Special Recognition to also capture a league championship as well, as the Crusaders were the 2013 Horizon League champions in addition to their success in the classroom. Valpo was also one of just two league programs (Detroit) to be named an All-Academic Team.

Last week saw a trio of Crusaders - Austin Gaugert, Kyle Henning and Thomas Wettstein - honored individually for their work on the golf course and in the classroom in being named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars by the GCAA. Four Valpo golfers were Academic All-League honorees as well.

"Academics is an essential component of our team culture, and I'm elated for our players," said Gring. "This is a special group of student athletes."
