Chris Daniels, a sophomore defensive back at Valparaiso University, was named to the 2003 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Third Team. A finance major from Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame, Daniels has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.234 through the 2002 Fall Semester. The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars award honors to minority student-athletes by sport. Daniels was previously selected to the All-Academic Pioneer Football League Second Team.
Five home games highlight Valparaiso University's 2003 Football Schedule. The Crusaders open the season on Aug. 30 at Murray State and play their home opener on Sept. 6 against Wisconsin Lutheran at 1 p.m. Homecoming will be Oct. 4 when Valpo hosts Morehead State at 1:30 p.m.
Valparaiso University head football coach Tom Horne announced the addition of four transfers to the Crusaders' team. Joining Valpo are tailback Nick Reid from Arizona Western JC in Yuma, Ariz.; defensive back Elliot Powell from Fullerton (Cal.) JC; defensive end Tony Hart from Valparaiso HS and Saginaw Valley State; and offensive lineman Josh Silko from Hope College.
Valparaiso University offensive lineman Tom Byrne was selected First Team All-Pioneer Football League North Division by the league's coaches. Four other Crusaders - wide receiver Rob Giancola, tight end Greg Sommersberger, placekicker Adam Hudak and punter Ryan Bateman - were awarded Honorable Mention All-PFL North Division status.
Campbellsville broke open a close game with 28 fourth-quarter points and went on to defeat Valpo 57-28. The Crusaders (0-2) did receive productive games from quarterback David Macchi and wide receiver Rob Giancola.
