Shideler Earns Valpo's Lone Win in Crusaders' Defeat at Dayton

Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) won his fifth singles match on Saturday afternoon, but it was the lone point Valparaiso could tally as the Crusaders dropped a 6-1 decision at Dayton.

Shideler earned a straight sets 6-2, 6-2 victory over Matt Sherman to move to 9-8 in singles action on the season.

Dayton (11-10) jumped in front in doubles, sweeping all three matches. The Crusaders' third team of David Bukowski (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect H.S.) and Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) forced a tie-break before falling 9-8 (5).

In singles play, the Flyers posted four straight sets victories to help clinch the match. Bukowski won the opening set at fourth singles before dropping his match 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Valparaiso (2-9) will return to the courts on Sunday morning as the Crusaders head to Cincinnati, Ohio to battle Xavier. First serve is set for 9 a.m. CDT.
