Three Crusaders Earn All-Conference Honors; Hochstetler Named Sixth Woman of the Year
Betsy Rietema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Christian H.S.) was a First Team All Mid-Con selection this season while Tamra Braun (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake H.S.) earned Second Team honors. Carrie Myers (Stickleyville, Va./Lee H.S.) was named Honorable Mention All-League.
Hochstetler becomes Valpo's first major award winner since 2002 when Katie Boone was named the league's Newcomer of the Year and Keith Freeman was the Coach of the Year. The sophomore guard has come off of the bench to average 5.4 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game for the Brown and Gold in 2006-2007. A 37.7% shooter from the floor, Hochstetler has made 46.2% of her tries from beyond the arc while connecting on 85.1% from the free throw line.
Rietema earns First Team All Mid-Con honors for the first time in her career after being a Second Team selection last season. The senior forward leads Valpo in scoring averaging 13.3 points per game while ranking second on the squad with 6.8 rebounds per night. In addition, Rietema has dished out a team high 2.6 assists per contest. She moved into the Crusaders' top-five all time in scoring this season.
Braun was selected to one of the All-Conference Team for the third straight season after earning First Team honors each of the last two seasons. The senior center has averaged 9.6 points, a team-leading 8.6 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game this season. Braun set school records for career rebounding and blocks earlier this year.
Myers was named Honorable Mention All Mid-Con for the second straight year. The senior guard is averaging 8.7 points per game while shooting 41.3% from three-point range on the season. She ranks among the top-15 in NCAA Division I in both threes per game as well as three-point percentage this season.
Valparaiso (19-10, 11-3 Mid-Con) finished second during the regular season and will face seventh-seeded Southern Utah (9-19, 5-9) on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Con Tournament.
