Crusaders Upend Alumni in Annual Event

            The Valparaiso men’s tennis team wrapped up Homecoming weekend with an 11-5 victory over its alumni on Saturday afternoon at the Valpo Tennis Complex in the annual event.

            Doubles proved to be the difference as the current team won five of the six matches.  Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) and Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) needed a tie-break to beat Nate Buckert and Nick Vuko 9-8 while Alex Lau (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson Senior H.S.) and Tom Litscher (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial H.S.) defeated Marc VeVerka and Jon Coles 8-4.  Dan Brunette (Carmel, Ind./Lutheran H.S. of Indianapolis) and Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) defeated Nic Kooyers and Joe Venegas 9-7 and Crusader manager Mike Korsemeyer teamed with assistant coach Jeff French for an 8-3 win.  Head coach Jim Daugherty got into the act with assistant Tim Shideler to defeat Jon Huffman and Cliff Barnett 8-2.

            The alumni did earn a doubles win though as Dave Bukowski and Shabbi Khan topped Phidias Fortune (San Antonio, Texas/New Braunfels H.S.) and Danny Lewallen (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley H.S.) 8-5.

            The alumni held their own in singles play.  Kooyers was an 8-5 victor over Lau while Jeff Vrabel picked up an 8-6 win over Wagner.  Bukowski won his second match of the day, 8-4, against Mike Shideler while Barnett downed Korsmeyer 8-1.

            Litscher topped VeVerka 8-3 while Brunette was an 8-6 winner against Buckert.  Stump beat Venegas by 8-3, the same score French topped Vuko.  Fortune was an 8-2 winner against Adams while Lewallen defeated Roller 8-6.

            The Crusaders will wrap up the fall season Oct. 18-21 at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships held in Minneapolis, Minn.
