Honig Leads Crusaders to 3rd Place Finish

Paced by Chris Honig’s (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]) eighth-place finish, the Valparaiso men’s cross country team placed third Saturday morning at the Evansville Invitational in Evansville, Ind.

The Crusader team registered 90 points on the meet for the third-place finish.  Creighton took home top team honors with 29 points.  Valpo defeated schools such as Lipscomb, Memphis, Murray State and Tennessee-Martin among the 13 competing squads.

Honig ran the second-fastest 8K time of his career, crossing the line in 25:38.49, sixth-best among the attached collegiate runners.  He was followed by Leandro Schultz (Valley View, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), who came home 14th with a time of 26:02.50.

Freshman Joel Hartenberger (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) improved his fastest 8K time of the season by over a minute, completing the course in 26:33.84, good for 27th place.  Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) was the fourth Crusader to cross the line, placing 31st with a time of 26:38.60, while Jordan Stanfill (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) rounded out Valpo’s team scoring with a 34th place finish in 26:41.88.

The race was the Crusaders’ final tune-up for the upcoming Horizon League Cross Country Championships, which Valparaiso will host at Sunset Hills Park on Saturday, Oct. 27.  The men’s championship, which will cover eight kilometers, is slated to start at noon.
