Final Results

Valparaiso wrapped up its first tournament of the fall season on Sunday afternoon with play at the Rocket Invitational in Toledo, Ohio.

The Crusaders failed to win a match on the afternoon, but Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) played the toughest match of the day for the Brown and Gold, forcing a first set tie-breaker against Akron in the Blue Singles flight.  Schwartz ended up falling 7-6 (5), 6-2.

“Jenny stepped it up in the final match against Akron this afternoon,” head coach Jay Adams said.  “She played a close match which is positive to take away from this weekend.”

Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) and Lindsey Gustafson (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) both dropped matches in the flight.

In the Gold Singles flight, Laura Lawson (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) played a solid second set against Akron before falling 6-0, 6-4.  She also dropped a match against Toledo.  Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) and Lauren Kloostra (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian H.S.) both competed in the flight as well.

In doubles play, Valpo faced both Toledo and Youngstown State on Sunday, but were unable to post any victories.

“As a team we see what we need to do to be competitive, and hopefully we can take steps towards that,” Adams concluded.

Valparaiso will return to action on Monday in Detroit, Mich. as the Crusaders battle Oakland and Wright State in dual action.
