Valparaiso set two school records on the final day of the Horizon League Championships on Saturday evening in Akron, Ohio.

Adam Jajtner (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington H.S.) shattered the school record in the mile more than nearly 18 seconds with his time of 16:26.58, placing seventh in the event.  The junior bettered Joel Bretscher’s 1977 mark of 16:44.11.

The Crusaders finished the meet with a school record in the 400 freestyle relay.  The team of Blake Edwards (Orange, Calif./Lutheran H.S. of Orange County), Jajtner, Dan Meals (Washington, Ill./Washington Community H.S.), and Sivak turned in a time of 3:11.09, bettering the 2000 mark by .03 seconds.

“Adam had a great swim in the 1650 and we had four solid swims in the record-setting relay,” interim head coach Barbara Tyree said.  “It was a great way to finish the evening and the championships.”

David Sivak (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) moved into second place on Valpo’s all-time list in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.66 seconds, finishing in a tie for 14th place.

Ansel Hillmer (Tampa, Fla./Hillsborough H.S.) turned in the fourth fastest time ever at Valpo in the 200 butterfly with his 1:59.97 effort on Saturday evening.

Kyle Verage (Hubertus, Wis./Marquette H.S.) was Valpo’s top finisher in the 200 backstroke with a mark of 2:02.02, the ninth best time all-time for a Crusader swimmer.  Skyler Lennan (Lee’s Summit, Mo./North H.S.) had the top Brown and Gold performance in the 200 breaststroke with a season’s best mark of 2:19.99.

“With a small contingent of swimmers we held our own this weekend and did a fine job,” Tyree concluded.

Valpo finished the season with a sixth place finish in the championships, tallying 193.5 points.  Wright State won the team title with 794 points followed by Cleveland State.
