Crusader Women Fall in Opening Round of Horizon League Championships

            Valparaiso opened play at the 2008 Horizon League Women’s Tennis Championships on Friday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind. and dropped a 4-0 decision to Cleveland State.

            The Vikings, the fourth seed, opened with a win in doubles, taking the first two matches.  Jackie Tabb and Jenn Myers defeated Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) and Jackie O’Reilly (DePere, Wis./DePere H.S.) 8-2 at third doubles while Morgan Ungerott and Charlotte Gibbons downed Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) and Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.) 8-2 at number one doubles.  Cleveland State’s Sanda Bjelan and Denisa Muntean led Laura Lawson (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) and Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) 7-4 when the match was stopped because the point was determined.

            Sajevic led her singles match at the top of the lineup 6-4, 0-1, but was unable to finish against Melissa Holzinger because the match was determined.  Cleveland State (17-7) posted wins at third, fourth, and fifth singles to capture the victory.  Myers topped Wingstrom 6-2, 6-1 while Bjel defeated Antrobus 6-0, 6-0.  Gibbons downed Lawson by the same score.  Tabb had a 6-2, 3-3 lead on Keifer at second singles and Muntean led O’Reilly 6-2, 2-1 when the match ended.

            Valparaiso (2-16), the ninth seed, will meet fifth-seeded Youngstown State (7-16) on Saturday in the consolation draw in Indianapolis.  The Penguins were upset 4-3 by number eight seeded Green Bay on Friday.  First serve is set for 9 a.m. CDT.  The winner of the Valpo-Youngstown State match will meet seventh-seeded Wright State in the seventh place match at 3 p.m. CDT, also on Saturday.
