Valparaiso senior libero Brittany Malicoat (Elkhart, Ind./Memorial) was named the U.S. Army Horizon League female Scholar-Athlete of the Week by the league office today after breaking the Crusader career digs record last weekend.

Malicoat broke the school’s career digs mark in the third set at Green Bay last Friday evening, surpassing Sara Silcox’s previous record of 1,887 digs.  The senior closed the match against the Phoenix with 23 digs, and added a match-best 21 digs the next afternoon at Milwaukee, bumping her career total to 1,917.  The 2007 Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year currently ranks third in the league, averaging 4.77 digs/set on the season.

In the classroom, Malicoat carries a 3.584 grade point average as an art history and public relations major.  She was a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll in both the fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters last school year, and was previously named to the Mid-Continent Conference All-Academic Team and the Mid-Con Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.
