Valparaiso opened Horizon League action on Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind., but was defeated by Butler 6-1 at the Butler Bubble.
Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) earned Valpo’s lone point on the afternoon, defeating Kahfii King 6-2, 6-1 at number six singles. The Bulldogs won the other five singles contests in straight sets.
Natali Jaimes downed Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) 6-2, 6-3 at the top of the lineup while Gabriella Bobrowski was a 6-1, 6-0 winner against Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) at the second spot. Molly Casperson downed Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) 6-2, 6-1 at number three singles while Becky Jenkins was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against Katie Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo H.S.) at the fourth spot. Cam Thompson added a 6-4, 6-1 win over Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) at fifth singles.
Butler (6-8, 0-1 Horizon) also swept all three doubles matches on the afternoon. Casperson and Jenkins were 8-3 victors against Schwartz and Keifer at the top of the order while Jaimes and Bobrowski were 8-2 winners against Lindsey Gustafson (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) and Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.). Ashley Breitenbach and Thompson topped Camill Burden (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) and Jackie O’Reilly (DePere, Wis./DePere H.S.) 8-0 to round out the lineup.
Valparaiso (1-10, 0-1) will return to action next Sunday morning for a 7 a.m. CDT match against Youngstown State in Youngstown, Ohio.
