Crusader Women Close Home Season Falling to Detroit

Detroit spoiled Senior Day for Valparaiso’s women’s tennis team on Sunday afternoon at Matchpoint Tennis Club, handing the Crusaders a 7-0 defeat to wrap up the regular season for both schools.

The Titans started the day sweeping the doubles contests.  Zeljka Minic and Annie Moore downed Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) and Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) 8-3 at the top of the lineup while Svetlana Flankova and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom topped Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) and Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.) 8-1 at the second spot.  Aneta Maricevic and Erin Weldon defeated Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) and Katie Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo H.S.) by the same 8-1 score at third doubles.

In singles action, Detroit (13-7, 6-2 Horizon) won all six matches in straight sets.  Moore defeated Sajevic 6-0, 6-4 at the top while Minic beat Keifer 6-0, 6-0 at the second spot.  Maricevic defeated Bilyeu 6-0, 6-1 at three and Flankova downed York 6-2, 6-1 at the fourth spot.  Sjoberg-Sundstrom defeated Lindsey Gustafson (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles while Weldon topped Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) 6-0, 6-0 at the bottom of the order.

“Kim played a great second set on Senior Day,” head coach Traci Young said.  “Detroit had a tough lineup today.  We’re looking ahead to the conference tournament now.”

Valparaiso (1-20, 0-8) will return to action on Friday in the first round of the Horizon League Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.  Pairings will be released early in the week.
