Friday, December 04, 2009
Behind David Sivak’s (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) fourth fastest 200 butterfly time in school history, Valparaiso enters the final day of competition in fifth place at the Calvin Winter Invitational held in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Sivak posted a time of 1:57.04 during Friday morning’s preliminary heats, just a second and a half off of the school record. He then finished sixth overall for the Crusaders in the evening finals.
Also during the morning session, the finals of the 400 medley relay took place. Kevin Fedde (Fort Collins, Colo./Heritage Christian H.S.), Ryan Burling (Morris, Ill./Morris Community H.S.), Trevor Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./Connersville H.S.), and Thomas Patrick (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.) posted a time of 3:52.96 to place ninth in the race.
Sivak, Austin Hunter (La Crescent, Minn./La Crescent H.S.), Trimpe, and Blake Edwards (Orange, Calif./Lutheran H.S. of Orange County) began the evening session with an eighth place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:29.03.
Hunter added a ninth place finish individually in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.76 seconds, just .05 seconds off of a spot on the school’s top-10 list. The sophomore also finished 13th in the 50 free with a time of 22.27 seconds.
Trimpe finished 11th individually in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.61 in the finals, an identical mark to what he posted in the prelims. Edwards added a 13th place effort in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.36 to lead the Brown and Gold in that event.
As a team, the Crusaders tallied 127 points through the first two days of competition, just three points behind Alma for fourth place in the standings. Grand Valley State leads the three-day meet with 770.5 points.
Valparaiso will close out action in the invitational on Saturday. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CST with finals scheduled for 5 p.m. CST.
