Valparaiso returned to Horizon League action on Friday afternoon, but dropped a 7-0 match to Detroit at Franklin Tennis Club in Southfield, Mich.
Detroit (4-9, 3-0 Horizon) jumped on top by sweeping the opening doubles point. Amanda Cornwell and Carolina Salas Espinosa teamed for an 8-1 victory over Camill Burden (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) and Brittany O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest H.S.) at the top of the order while Svetlana Flankova and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom topped Katie Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo H.S.) and Abby Wright (Sarasota, Fla./Pendleton H.S.) 8-2 at the second spot. Melanie Capuano and Erin Weldon added an 8-0 win over Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) and Jackie O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./DePere H.S.) at number three doubles.
In singles action, the Titans took all six matches in straight sets. Bilyeu played Valpo’s closest match, at number three, but fell 6-1, 6-3 against Cornwell. Brittany O’Reilly fell 6-0, 6-1 to Sjoberg-Sundstrom at the second spot while Jackie O’Reilly dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match at five against Weldon. Espinosa topped Wright 6-0, 6-0 at the top of the lineup while Flankova beat York at fourth singles by the same score. Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) also fell 6-0, 6-0 at number six against Victoria Baca.
Valparaiso (0-7, 0-3) will step out of conference action on Wednesday afternoon, travelling to Marion, Ind. First serve is set for 1 p.m. CDT. to face Indiana Wesleyan.
