Valparaiso’s men’s golf team shot a two-round total of 634 on Saturday on the opening day of the adidas Hoosier Invitational held at the Indiana University Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind.  The Crusaders shot 324 in the opening round before improving by 14 strokes to shoot 310 in round two.

The Crusaders sit in 18th place entering Sunday’s final 18-hole round, just two strokes behind IUPUI.  Valpo holds a seven shot lead over Canisius after trailing by 10 shots following round one

Adam Gray (Portland, Ind./Jay County H.S.) paced the Crusaders on day one, carding rounds of 79 and 77 for a total of 156, tied for 59th overall.  Andy Webb (Bedford, Ind./North  Lawrence H.S.) is one shot behind Gray posting rounds of 79 and 78.

Brad Winters (Elgin, Ill./Saint Edward H.S.) shot 161 (83-78) while Josh Kalita (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) posted a 162 (83-79).  Austin Gaugert (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger H.S.) rounded out the Valpo lineup shooting 87-77 (164).

The host Hoosiers lead the tournament by 22 shots, shooting eight-under par 560 (282-278) on the 6,813-yard, par-71 layout.  Individually, Indiana’s Chase Wright leads the event at four-under par 138 (70-68).

Valparaiso will return to the links on Sunday morning for the final round.  The shotgun start will begin at 7:30 a.m. CDT.
