Sunday’s final round turned out to be the best of the tournament for Valparaiso University, as the Crusaders shot 307 to move up one position and finish in 17th place at the adidas Hoosier Invitational held at the Indiana University Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind.

The Crusaders finished the tournament at 941, one stroke ahead of IUPUI, passing the Jaguars on the final day.

Josh Kalita (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) led the way for the Brown and Gold on Sunday, shooting a three-over par 74 on the 6,813-yard, par-71 layout.  He finished the tournament at 236, tying for tops on the team.  Kalita shared the top spot on the team with Andy Webb (Bedford, Ind./North Lawrence H.S.), who shot 79 over the final round.

Austin Gaugert (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger H.S.) carded a 75 on Sunday for the team’s second lowest score, finishing the tournament at 239.  Adam Gray (Portland, Ind./Jay County H.S.) shot 81 in round three to finish at 237 for the Crusaders while Brad Winters (Elgin, Ill./Saint Edward H.S.) carded a 79 to finish at 240.

“The guys played pretty well today,” Mike Higdon.  “Two days in a row we counted all scores in the 70s.  We dug ourselves a whole in the first round yesterday but fought back and caught a couple of teams.”

Valparaiso will now head to Spring Hill, Tenn. on Monday for the first two rounds of the Big Blue Intercollegiate Invitational.  Play begins at 8 a.m.
