Valparaiso’s women’s tennis team wrapped up its first tournament of the fall season on Saturday playing both outdoors on the clay courts as well as indoors on the hard courts due to rain at the River Forest Invitational held in River Forest, Ill.

“Today was a tough day for us with the rain and having to switch surfaces,” head coach Traci Young said.  “We played fairly well though for having one of these tennis days.”

Brittany O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest H.S.) dropped her first match of the day outdoors in flight one 6-0, 6-0 against Jill Furlong of Western Illinois while Shea Hennessy (Palos Park, Ill./Marist H.S.) fell 6-2, 6-0 against Jennfer Bradfield of Green Bay in her first match of the same flight.

In flight two, Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.) fell to Rebecca Nelson of Green Bay 6-2, 6-4.  Katie Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo H.S.) suffered a 6-3, 6-3 setback in the third flight against Maria Anderson of Green Bay while Stephanie Krebs (Idaho Falls, Idaho/Idaho Falls H.S.) dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match against Julia Kedrzyski, also of the Phoenix.

The rains then came, forcing play indoors.  The lone doubles contest of the day saw Zakiewicz and O’Reilly suffer an 8-3 loss to Anderson and Kedrzyski of Green Bay.

Hennessy played another singles contest against Emily Lawent of Green Bay, falling 6-1, 6-1 while O’Reilly dropped a 6-0, 6-2 match against Marcela Brandao.

Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.), playing her only match of the day in flight two, also fell 6-1, 6-4 against Amy Unzicker of Western Illinois.

Valparaiso will return to the courts next Saturday for the Alumni Tournament as part of Homecoming weekend.  The event begins at 9 a.m. at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
