Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) posted wins in both singles and doubles, but it was not enough for Valparaiso as the Crusaders fell 6-1 to Detroit at the Northwest Athletic Club in Michigan City, Ind.

Stump was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over David Stabley at number six singles to earn the Crusaders lone point of the afternoon.  He also teamed with Kevin DeHerrera (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) for an 8-6 victory at number three doubles against Stabley and Nick Tolomei.

Detroit (5-9, 1-3 Horizon) opened the match with wins at the top two doubles spots to take the day’s first point.  Alex Latosinsky and Pablo Nunez topped Jose Gaspar (Sao Paulo, Brazil/CEAD H.S.) and Eric Honert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) 8-5 at number one while Chris Cheung and Cesar Escobar Serrano were 8-4 winners over Chris Baum (Charlotte, N.C./Providence H.S.) and Adam Whitmer (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview H.S.) at number two.

In singles action, Latosinsky downed Gaspar 7-6 (2), 6-2 at the top of the order.  Baum and DeHerrera both went three sets before falling.  Baum dropped a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 match to Tolomei at number two while DeHerrera fell 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-3 against Cheung at the third spot.  At fourth singles, Honert fell 6-2, 6-1 against Serrano while Whitmer lost 6-3, 6-2 to Nunez at number five singles.

Valparaiso (5-8, 0-2) heads to Ohio next weekend for a pair of matches, beginning Saturday afternoon against Cleveland State.  First serve against the Vikings is set for 1 p.m. CDT.
