Valparaiso’s women’s basketball team began its foreign tour in China on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 9) with a 110-61 victory over Zhejiang University of Technology in a unique format.
The Crusaders faced Zhejiang University of Technology’s women’s team in the first half before battling the school’s men’s squad in the second half. Valpo downed the women 63-20 before defeating the men 47-41.
“This was a great opportunity to play a team from a sister university in another culture,” head coach Keith Freeman said. “I am proud of how hard our team played.”
Maegan Callaway (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville H.S.) led the way for the Brown and Gold with 25 points and five rebounds while Betsy Adams (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes H.S.) added 22 points in the victory. Gina Lange (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake H.S.) tallied 11 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds while freshman Mallory Ladd (Evansville, Ind./Memorial H.S.) also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Eleven different Crusaders scored on the afternoon.
Valparaiso will return to the court on Thursday for its second of three games on the trip.
