South Dakota Defeats Valpo in Monday Tennis Action

Valparaiso picked up a win at number one doubles but that was the lone victory for the Crusaders on Monday afternoon as the Crusaders fell to South Dakota 7-0 at the Valpo Tennis Complex.

Megan Bartels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central H.S.) and Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.) teamed for an 8-6 victory over Alena Sergeychik and Shadi Soleymani at the top of the doubles lineup.  The Coyotes posted victories at the other two doubles spots though to earn the day’s first point.  Nina Barudzic and Michelle Elkin topped Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) and Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) 8-4 at the second spot.  Veronika Makashov and Yamini Reddy defeated Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph’s H.S.) and Brittany O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest H.S.) 8-3 at third doubles.

South Dakota (16-9) swept the six singles matches, all in straight sets.  Elkin defeated Bartels 6-3, 6-1 at number one singles while Sergeychik was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Hamel at two.  At third singles York fell to Soleymani 6-0, 6-2 and Barudzic defeated Fredlake 6-0, 6-0 at the fourth spot.  Zakiewicz fell 6-1, 6-4 to Makashov at fifth singles while O’Reilly dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Reddy at the bottom of the order.

Valparaiso (4-11) will return to action on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Bowling Green, Ohio to face the Falcons of Bowling Green State University.  First serve is slated for 12 p.m. CDT.
