Valparaiso University’s baseball program had three players voted to the Horizon League’s All-Academic Team for their efforts both on the diamond and in the classroom.  Andrew Bain (Indianapolis, Ind./Park Tudor H.S.), Tyler Deetjen (Saint Charles, Ill./East H.S.), and Will Hagel (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect H.S.) were all selected for the 12-member team.

Bain batted .318 for the Crusaders with 20 runs batted in and six stolen bases.  His 83 hits were tied for third most in school history for a single season.  A Second Team All-Horizon League selection as a utility player, he was named to the Gary All-Regional Team in the NCAA Tournament.  Bain saw action at second base, designated hitter, and the outfield throughout the season.

In the classroom, Bain, a junior, carries a 3.75 cumulative grade point average as a civil engineering major, and was named to the All-Academic Team for the second straight season.

Deetjen also earned Second Team All-Horizon League honors and was named to the Horizon League’s All-Tournament Team.  He led the Crusaders with eight victories on the hill and sported a 3.12 earned run average.  The senior right-hander set the school’s single season record pitching 121.1 innings, and struck out 65 while walking just 11 on the year.  He was twice named the Horizon League’s Pitcher of the Week and ranked fourth in the country for fewest walks per nine innings.

A finance major, Deetjen sports a 3.35 cumulative grade point average.

Hagel, a Second Team All-Horizon League pick hit .294 on the year with 42 runs batted in, second most on the team.  The Crusader outfielder tallied 10 doubles, three triples, and a pair of home runs while posting a .390 slugging percentage.  He had the team’s second longest hitting streak of the season, a 12-game stretch entering the Horizon League Tournament.

Hagel, a fifth-year senior, has a 3.58 GPA while working on his MBA.  Also a member of the All-Academic Team in 2011, he had earned his undergraduate degree in international business prior to the season.
