Despite having two singles players within a game of winning their matches, Valparaiso was defeated 7-0 by the Youngstown State Penguins Saturday evening at Boardman Tennis Center.
The Penguins claimed the doubles point with a tight 8-6 win at No. 1 and an 8-2 victory at No. 2.
Brian Hickey was the first to fall at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 loss.
Felipe Rosa defeated Michael Baiocchi in straight sets at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-0.
At No. 2, Chris Baum dropped a first set tiebreaker before coming up short 6-3 in his loss.
Michael Savaglio, Lucas Waak and Eric Honert all went to three sets at No. 3, 5, and 1 respectively.
Savaglio won the first set of his match 6-3. But Dawoud Kabli battled back to take the second set in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-5), before taking the decisive set 6-4.
Honert and Silviu Mistreanu split the first two sets before Mistreanu won three of the last four games of the third set to prevail 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
At No. 5, Waak dropped his singles match 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to Rodrigo Campos.
Valpo (11-9) will head down the road to Cleveland to take on the Vikings Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm ET/2:00 pm CT.
