Western Illinois Wins over Valpo
Senior Tate Wegehaupt won two individual events Saturday at a duel meet versus Western Illinois.

The Valparaiso men's swimming team dropped a 155-129 decision while the women fell 152-129 at Western Illinois University Saturday in Macomb.

Senior Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) blew past the competition in the 1000-yard freestyle with an 11:18.40 time, nearly 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. She followed that up with an additional first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. 

Teammate Ciara Lightner (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) took first-place in the 100-yard backstroke thanks to a 1:03.69 finish. The sophomore edged out WIU's Abby Hansen, who clocked in at 1:04.01.

Freshman Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) and Western Illinois' Sarah Rosenhauer had a photo finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. It was determined that Rosenhauer (1:12.05) touched the wall just ahead of Trimpe (1:12.09). Trimpe later sought her revenge in the 100-yard freestyle, netting first place with a 57.55 time.

Junior Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan) continued to impress as she took home first-place in the 200-yard butterfly. Segatto stopped the clock at 2:16.59, nearly four full seconds of the rest of the pack. Her 100-yard butterfly victory was much closer. Segatto touched the wall at 1:02.74, just a fingernail ahead of WIU's Kelsey Kirchhoefer (1:02.82).

The team of Segatto, Trimpe, Ali Taubert (Bloomington, Ill./University) and Makenna Cannon (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) enjoyed a group win in the 800-yard freestyle relay as they registered a 8:26.48 time.

On the men's side, Frederick Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) earned the Crusaders nine points with a 1:00.12 time in the men's 100-yard breaststroke. 

Sophomore Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) cleared the two-minute mark (1:59.93) as he claimed first place in the 200-yard butterfly, He later won the 100-yard butterfly with a 53.40 finish.

Senior Tate Wegehaupt (Tigard, Ore./Tigard) was victorious in another 50-yard freestyle race Saturday. He outlasted teammate Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West) by .27 of a second. Wegehaupt earned his second individual win a couple races later in the 200-yard breaststroke, thanks to a 2:13.34 time.

Freshman Brian Wasicak (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) got in on the fun, turning in a 4:57.09 finish in the 500-yard freestyle, good for first place.

The Crusaders will have a couple weeks off to prepare for the Calvin College Invitational in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The first day of the meet is scheduled for Thursday, December 5th.
