Valpo Finishes Fourth in McCafferty Trophy Race

The Valparaiso University athletic department posted its highest finish in the Horizon League’s McCafferty Trophy standings since the Crusaders joined the league in 2007, placing fourth as the league announced the final 2014-15 standings on Thursday. Valpo finished third in the race for the men’s sports title as well.

Valpo ended the year with 30.5 total points, edging out Green Bay for fourth position overall, and posted 18.5 points in men’s sports to trail just Oakland and Milwaukee on that side of the ledger. Oakland claimed the McCafferty Trophy title and also earned both the men’s and women’s sports titles as well.

Valpo registered points in 10 of 17 sports during the 2014-15 campaign, highlighted by league titles in men’s basketball and women’s soccer. The McCafferty Trophy standings award seven points to the top team in the league, down to one point for fifth position. For the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball, points are awarded based on combined regular-season (60 percent) and championship (40 percent) finishes. For all other sports, points are based on performance in the League championships.
