15 Crusaders Earn Spring Academic All-League Honors


15 Valparaiso student-athletes earned spots on the Horizon League Spring Academic All-League teams, as announced by the league office this morning. Men’s outdoor track and field had five athletes honored, while baseball, men’s golf and women’s outdoor track and field each had three selections to go with one from men’s tennis.

The Chicago White Sox selected junior right-handed pitcher Drew Hasler in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday. The selection represents the sixth draft pick in the last six years for Valpo and the 21st in school history.

Lundeen Named to Horizon League All-Tournament Team


Junior starting pitcher Dalton Lundeen was named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team on Saturday. The left-hander tossed a 141-pitch shutout of Youngstown State in Valpo's 8-0 victory in the opening game of the Horizon League Baseball Championship on Wednesday. Lundeen finished 2015 with a 3.75 earned run average and five wins for the third consecutive season.

Baseball Concludes Season with Loss to Milwaukee


Valpo and Milwaukee entered the fifth inning tied 2-2, but the Panther offense erupted for a dozen runs in three frames as part of a 14-2 win over the Brown and Gold. Seniors Spencer Mahoney and Mark Johnson both went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Mahoney set the school record for career walks in the second inning with a five-pitch free pass.

The Valparaiso Crusaders plated four runs in the latter innings of Thursday morning's contest against UIC, but it wasn't enough as the Flames hung on for an 8-5 win over the Brown and Gold at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Indiana. On the back of their ace Dalton Lundeen, the Crusaders recorded an 8-0 win over Youngstown State in the opening game of the Horizon League Championship Wednesday afternoon at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Indiana. The junior scattered seven hits, struck out seven, and walked two en route to his second shutout in his last four starts.

The Horizon League descends upon Northwest Indiana this week as an NCAA Tournament berth is up for grabs at Oil City Stadium. Fourth-seeded Valpo will host the fifth-seeded Youngstown State Penguins in the opening game at 12 p.m. CT. However, Purdue reliever Matt Frawley recorded the final two outs of the game via strikeout to preserve a 6-4 Boilermaker victory. Spencer Mahoney led the Crusader offense with three hits.

Junior Ryan Fritze was rewarded for his seven shutout innings against Youngstown State on Sunday with a Horizon League Pitcher of the Week award on Monday. Fritze did not allow a hit until the fifth inning as he scattered three hits and punched out a season-high nine batters.

A forecast calling for inclement weather in Nashville has forced the cancellation of a round-robin style tournament involving Valparaiso baseball. Valpo will instead face Belmont only this weekend.
