Butler Sweeps Doubleheader From Valpo

Indianapolis, Ind. - After sweeping a doubleheader from Butler on Saturday in Valparaiso, the Crusaders (6-11-1) were swept 8-4 and 6-0 by the Bulldogs. Valpo's Sean Peickert went 4-for-7, which included two doubles, on the day.

In the first game, Butler (12-13) led 8-0 after scoring two in the first inning and six in the fourth. The Crusaders tallied three runs in the fifth on Peickert's RBI double and a two-run error. Marc Boggio, who added an RBI single in the seventh, finished with two RBIs.

Craig Costello (2-2) earned the win, allowing two earned runs and four hits in 5 innings. Mike Tomaszewski pitched the last 2 innings for the save. Todd Evans (1-2) took the loss, allowing two earned runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings.

In the second game, Butler's Jon Olson and Ryan Chenoweth combined on the four-hit shutout. The game was scoreless until the Bulldogs' Jeff Brown stole home in the fifth. Butler pushed five more runs across in the sixth, two on bases-loaded walks.

Peickert went 3-for-3 with a double and Jeff Mandsager had Valpo's other hit.

Olson (1-2) limited Valpo to four hits, while striking out six and walking four in 5 innings. Chenoweth hurled the final two innings for the save. Tom Starck (0-1) started for the Crusaders, pitching 5 1/3 innings. He allowed four earned runs and five hits, while fanning five and walking five.

Valpo plays at Notre Dame on Wednesday at 5 p.m. EST.
