Valpo Sweeps Twinbill From North Dakota State; Crusaders Have Won Eight of Last Nine

Valparaiso, Ind. - Mike Arensdorff had three hits and three RBIs and Brian Rzepka had three hits, including a two-run homer, as Valpo swept a doubleheader from North Dakota State by scores of 11-7 and 6-1. Nick Mazzone limited to the Bison to one run over 6 innings in the nightcap as the Crusaders won for the eighth time in their last nine games.

Tyler Lowell added three hits and one RBI on the afternoon. Lowell and Matt Augustine had two doubles each - one in each game. John Giusti, who tripled, finished with three RBIs in the twinbill.

Valpo (19-26) overcame a four-run second-inning deficit in the opener. The Crusaders tied the game with four runs in the second. After Augustine stole third and scored on the catcher's throwing error, Giusti delivered an RBI triple, scoring Jeff Rickert. Rzepka tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run blast - his second of the season - over the left center field fence.

The Crusaders took a 5-4 lead in the third on Aaron Cameron's RBI single to right field. NDSU (6-38-1) knotted the contest at 5-5 in the fourth when Greg Plecki scored on a 4-6-3 double play.

Over the next two innings, Valpo took control, plating three runs in each of the fourth and fifth frames. Perri belted a one-out triple to center in the fourth and touched home on Arensdorff's single. With two outs, Augustine ripped an RBI double to right center and scored on Lowell's double to center. In the fifth, Arensdorff hit a two-run double and Kutansky lifted a sacrifice fly to score Perri, who had singled.

The Bison pulled within 11-7 with two runs in the sixth.

Harvey Yergin (4-6) allowed four earned runs over 6 innings to earn the victory. The sophomore righthander fanned three and walked three. Dallas Cawiezell pitched a one-two-three seventh. NDSU used six pitchers with reliever Shane Bushland (1-5) suffering the loss.

Tim Erickson went 4-for-5 with two RBIs for the Bison.

In the nightcap, Valpo scored four runs in the first off starter Jay Mitchell, who pitched two-thirds of an inning. Rzepka led off with a single and Perri walked before both scored on wild pitches. Augustine hammered another RBI double to center and Giusti was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Crusaders tacked on two more in the third when Giusti was again hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The second run scored when Rzepka hit into a double play.

Giusti and Rickert were hit by three pitches each as the Crusaders were hit by eight pitches in the twinbill.

NDSU scored its lone run in the fourth when Ryan Langlais tripled to right center and scored on Gavin Hofer's infield single.

Mazzone, who allowed one run and five hits, struck out six and walked one. The sophomore southpaw escaped a bases-loaded and nobody-out situation in the second by retiring the next three hitters on a foul out, strikeout and groundout. Adam Knobel struck out all three of the batters he faced in the seventh.

Valpo hosts North Dakota State on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
