Valpo Loses Slugfest in Series Finale at Austin Peay
Sunday, March 5, 2006
Kevin Perri (South Bend, Ind./Adams H.S.) went 3-for-5 with a homerun and six runs batted in but Austin Peay's offense was even better as the Governors defeated Valparaiso 16-10 to take the rubber game of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon in Clarksville, Tenn.

Valpo jumped in front 4-2 in the second inning as Jon Rupno (Green Bay, Wis./Pulaski H.S.) tripled home two runs while Perri and Ryan Manthei (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper H.S.) both single home runs.

Austin Peay tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs and added three more in the third to take a 7-4 lead. Perri's three-run double in fourth tied the game at seven and Matthew Augustine's (Muskego, Wis./Muskego H.S.) RBI single in the fifth put the Brown and Gold back in front.

The fifth inning did in the Crusaders though, as the Governors scored eight times on seven hits to break the game open. Perri added a two-run homer in the sixth to cap off his day, but it was not nearly enough for Valpo.

Kevin Kutansky (Schererville, Ind./Munster H.S.) went 3-for-4 with a double for the Crusaders while Josh Piazza (Niles, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) also had two hits.

Ryan Gilboy went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored for Austin Peay (6-3) while Cody Youngblood added three hits and drove in four runs.

Dallas Cawiezell (Long Grove, Iowa/North Scott H.S.) had a rough go of it on the mound for Valpo getting his first start of the year, going just four innings while allowing 11 hits and nine runs, eight of which were earned. Jamie Ganz registered the win out of the bullpen for Austin Peay pitching a scoreless fifth inning.

Valparaiso (1-2) will continue heading south for its spring trip and play in Bradenton, Fla. on Tuesday afternoon against Central Michigan. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. CST.
