Indiana State scored in six of the eight innings the Sycamores they came to the plate on Friday evening and defeated Valparaiso 9-5 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Valpo jumped in front in the opening inning on a single by Ryan Manthei (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper H.S.). Manthei's second RBI of the game in the third put the Crusaders back in front 2-1.
Indiana State scored two in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 5-2 advantage before back-to-back run scoring singles by Joe Lazar (Traverse City, Mich./Central H.S.) and Mark Schoeck (Bellefountaine, Ohio/Bellefountaine H.S.) brought the Crusaders to within one in the fifth.
The Sycamores tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth before Michael Arensdorff (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott H.S.) drove in the Brown and Gold's final run in the eighth. For the fifth-year senior, the hit marked the 16th time in 17 games this year he got at least one hit.
Chris Schmidt went 3-for-3 for Indiana State while Dave Brumagin drove home four runs for the Sycamores.
Dallas Cawiezell (Long Grove, Iowa/North Scott H.S.) started and suffered the loss (1-2) for the Crusaders, working 3.2 innings allowing five runs and eight hits. Ryan Hayes (3-2) earned the win for Indiana State, tossing 6.2 innings.
Valparaiso (4-13) and Indiana State (11-11) will continue their four-game weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader in Terre Haute. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. CDT.
