Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Valparaiso University’s Brett Bivens (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) has been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week after hitting .333 in four games last week.

The sophomore extended his hitting streak to 10 games with hits in each contest.  He also scored twice and drove home two runs on the week.  His pinch hit walk scored a run in Valpo’s 7-6 victory at Milwaukee on Friday.

A finance major, Bivens has a 3.75 cumulative grade point average.  He has been on the Dean’s List every semester and was named to the Horizon League’s Academic Honor Roll last fall.  He was a member of the Mid-Continent Conference’s All-Academic Team as a freshman and earned Valparaiso University Presidental Honors this spring.

Bivens is the 14th Crusader to earn Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors during this school year, and the first baseball player to earn the honor.
