Valpo's 10-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Tomas Michelson and the UIC Flames Friday night in a 3-0 contest at Les Miller Field.
A pitcher's duel through five-and-a-half innings swayed the Flames' way when the home team plated three runs in the bottom of the 6th.
Second baseman Andres Ortegano led off the frame with a ground-rule double down the right field line. John Coen stepped to the plate attempting to advance Ortegano to third base via a sacrifice bunt. The Flames' shortstop successfully got the bunt down - and subsequently reached - after Billy Cribbs threw the ball away from Tanner Vavra who ran over to cover first base. Ortegano came around to score on the mishap.
Valpo starter Chris DeBoo issued a four-pitch walk to the next batter before a Ryan Boss single to center field scored two more Flames.
The Crusaders mustered five hits against Michelson - four of the infield variety - in their first loss since Arizona State on April 20th.
DeBoo was tagged with the loss. He threw seven innings, allowed three hits, two earned runs, and a walk while fanning three.
Valpo (24-24, 10-9 HL) and UIC (22-25, 9-10 HL) continue their series Saturday afternoon at 2:05 pm at Les Miller Field in Chicago.
Cole Webb (3-6, 2.75) will face freshman Ian Lewandowski (4-3, 2.91).
