The roller coaster ride that has become the 2013 season hit another low Sunday as UIC completed the sweep over Valpo with a 5-2 win at Les Miller Field.
The Flames scored three runs following the 7th-inning stretch to discard a 2-0 Crusader lead. UIC held on to advance to 11-10 in Horizon League play and now stands alone in second place.
The Crusaders jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
John Loeffler drove in his 37th run of the season with a ground ball to short that plated Andrew Bain. Bain led off the game with a double down the left field line.
A pair of double plays in the first and second innings served as starter Dalton Lundeen's best friend. The twin killings erased the leadoff men whom had reached in both frames.
The Crusaders put another run on the board in their half of the third. UIC starting pitcher Mike McKinley issued a walk to Bain with one out before Bryce Hara lined a double over Alex De La Rosa's head in left.
Tanner Vavra made it a 2-0 game with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Bain.
Lundeen was cruising through his eighth start of 2013 until UIC's third time through the order.
Ryan Boss drove a double down the left field line on the first pitch he saw from the Valpo starter in the bottom of the 7th. Alex De La Rosa bounced an infield shortstop before a walk to Alex Jurich signaled the end of Lundeen's day.
Kyle Wormington came on in relief with the bases loaded and no outs.
A pair of sac flies knotted the game up at 2-2.
John Coen provided what would be the game-winner as he dumped a two-out single into shallow left field.
UIC added two insurance runs in its half of the 8th.
Tim Suminski and Joey Begel worked scoreless 8th and 9th innings as the UIC bullpen held for the second straight day.
Valpo (24-26, 10-11 Horizon) has three conference games remaining versus Youngstown State (14-37, 8-13 Horizon) next weekend. The Crusaders can finish anywhere from second to fifth place.
The Crusaders will welcome Toledo to town on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt at 3:00 pm.
