Valparaiso University head baseball coach Brian Schmack announced two additions to his coaching staff Tuesday morning. Mike Stalowy has been named top assistant while Ben Wolgamot has been hired as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator.
Stalowy arrives to Valpo having spent the past two seasons as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Bellarmine University (Ky.). Stalowy worked extensively with the hitters and infielders while under former Knight head coach Matt Tyner. He came to Bellarmine after a season as student assistant coach at Illinois State University, Stalowy's alma mater.
In addition to his responsibilities to Bellarmine, Stalowy also worked as both tournament director for Diamond Sports Promotions and private hitting instructor. Under Stalowy's tutelage, eleven players have gone on to sign professional contracts.
Stalowy was a standout on the diamond in his four years at Illinois State. An All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, he accumulated 169 hits in 178 games as a Redbird from 2006 to 2009. The former first baseman finished his playing career with 30 stolen bases and a .296 batting average. Stalowy received his bachelor's degree in parks and recreation administration from Illinois State in 2010.
"Mike is a guy that will challenge our guys on and off the field. No stone will be unturned when it comes to the teaching and development of our student athletes," Schmack said.
Wolgamot comes to the Crusaders after a two-year stay at Eastern Illinois University as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator. Wolgamot played collegiately at Danville Area Community College (Ill.) from 2006-2007 before joining the Purdue Boilermakers in 2008-2009. In addition to batting .400 in his final season at Danville, Wolgamot earned both Easton Defensive Player of the Year accolades and a Rawlings Gold Glove Award. He continued his excellence on the field at Purdue where he was named a First Team All-Big Ten second baseman in 2008.
Wolgamot earned a bachelor's degree in health and fitness from Purdue University in 2010.
He returned to Danville Area C.C. in 2010 as an assistant coach before he served in the same capacity at Wabash College in 2011. After a season at Wabash, Wolgamot joined the Eastern Illinois coaching staff.
"Ben has quality Division I experience which will translate well with the guys and earn him instant credibility. He is a tireless recruiter who can identify the correct guys for this program and continue to take us to the next level," Schmack said.
