Valparaiso earned a doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon against the University of Dayton after defeating the Flyers 3-1 in game two of the twin bill in Dayton, Ohio.  The Flyers won the opening game 4-2.

Valpo pitching limited the Flyers to just three hits in the victory, as Alex Berry (Olney, Ill./East Richland H.S.) allowed just one run in five innings prior to a rain delay earning his first Crusader victory (1-3).  He struck out five in the effort.

The Crusaders struck first in the opening inning, as Dan DeBruin (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly H.S.) doubled and Brett Bivens (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) singled him home.

After Dayton tied the game in the second, the Crusaders scored what would prove to be the two winning runs in the fourth.  Josh Wallace (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine H.S.) walked and Jason Brunelli (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield H.S.) singled.  Andrew Quinnette (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo H.S.) doubled home both runners, and the Crusader pitching staff held the Flyers in check the rest of the way.

Jarad Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll H.S.) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn his first collegiate save.

In the opener, Dayton limited Valpo to just four hits in taking game one of the twinbill.  A double in the first and a single in the second put the Flyers on top 2-0.  Matt Lenski (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University H.S.) tied the contest with a two-run single in the third.  Dayton scored a pair in the fourth to record the victory though.

Jon Gulbransen (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran H.S.) worked 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and suffered the loss (0-3) for the Crusaders while Alex Dye (2-0) earned the win for Dayton, allowing just three hits in five innings of work.

Valparaiso (3-13) and Dayton (8-3) will conclude their weekend series with another doubleheader on Sunday afternoon beginning at noon CDT.
