Valparaiso University senior Tyler Deetjen (Saint Charles, Ill./East H.S.) has been named the Horizon League’s Pitcher of the Week after tossing seven scoreless innings in the Crusaders’ season opener on Friday.

The southpaw scattered just four hits and walked one while striking out four in his first start of the season.  He left the game with a 2-0 lead but earned a no decision.  The Crusaders eventually won the game 5-2 in 13 innings and took two out of three games to open the year.

The Crusader starters were solid all weekend long, allowing just two runs and 11 hits in 20 innings of work.

Valparaiso (2-1) will return to the diamond on Friday afternoon, facing #4 Arkansas.  First game in the opener of the three game series is set for 3:05 p.m. at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark.
