Valparaiso University’s Spencer Mahoney (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township H.S.) has been named to the 2012 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Team as selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Mahoney, one of five freshmen shortstops nationwide to be selected for the honor, is the only Horizon League selection on this year’s Freshmen All-American Team.

The Crusader rookie led Valpo in batting with a .348 average despite missing 27 games due to an injury.  He had 39 hits in 112 at bats in 2012, scoring 20 runs and driving home 23.  In addition, Mahoney had eight doubles and drew 23 walks for a team-leading .468 on base percentage.

Mahoney also garnered First Team All-Horizon League accolades this year and was named the conference’s Batter of the Week for his efforts the final week of the regular season.  Mahoney was named to the Horizon League’s All-Tournament Team as well as the conference’s All-Newcomer Team.
