Oil City Stadium to Host 2015 HL Baseball Championship

Valparaiso University and the Horizon League have announced its selection of Oil City Stadium as the site of the 2015 Horizon League Baseball Championship.

Located in nearby Whiting, Indiana, the facility is currently home to the Northwest Indiana Oilmen. Oil City Stadium, which opened in 2011, features a natural grass field and the ability to seat 800 fans.

Whiting Mayor Joe Stahura, an avid baseball fan who has visited all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums currently in operation, was instrumental in landing the tournament in his city's backyard.

"The City of Whiting is both excited and honored to serve as host to the Horizon League Baseball Championship this coming May. Events of this nature help us showcase our community by bringing visitors into our City. We look forward to a great event and thank Valparaiso University and the Horizon League for selecting Oil City Stadium as their tournament site," Stahura said.

The left field fence at Oil City Stadium sits 300 feet from home plate; however, batters will contend with a 25-foot wall. The power alleys are 376 feet, while it's 403 feet to dead center. Right field poses a conventional dimension of 330 feet.

Youngstown State enters the 2015 season as the reigning Horizon League Tournament champions. The Penguins unseated the back-to-back champion Crusaders en route to their first title since 2004.

The 2015 Horizon League Baseball Championship will begin on Wednesday, May 20th and run through Saturday, May 23rd.
